Biblical marriage.

Many churches have conformed to the world’s perspective on marriage and divorce. In today’s culture marriage is not a covenant until death do us apart. People try to find “just causes” and “reasons” to divorce their spouses. In the scripture divorce is unacceptable to God. He in fact hates it.

Marriage is for life. It’s not easy to be married to a difficult person which is why we have to be careful who we choose to marry. But once we are married to that person it’s a relationship for life. Until death separates us. Here are some scriptures that make this very clear. We can choose to ignore it; find people who agree with us, go to churches that turn a blind eye to our disobedience but one day we will stand before God and answer him for the lives we have lived.

Marriage a union established by God.

“And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19‬:‭4‬-‭6‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

God hates divorce.

“For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the Lord of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.””

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2‬:‭16‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of Heart.

“He *said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19‬:‭8‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Divorce is permitted on grounds of adultery.

“And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19‬:‭9‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

“And He *said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.””

‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Divorce is permitted on grounds of abandonment by an unbelieving spouse.

“Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭7‬:‭15‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Divorce does not mean remarriage there is no scripture which supports that.

Marrying a divorced person is adultery.

Adultery is immorality

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.””

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭14‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Only scripture for remarriage is when the spouse dies.

“For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭7‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Someone may say what about say what about abuse.

Based on the whole counsel of scriptures,  law is for the law breaker. Separation is valid but not divorce.

What if that person does not change?

Stay single until the person passes away.

What about God divorcing Israel?

He divorces Israel for her adultery but he reconciles back to Israel.

The teaching of the Bible concerning marriage is not for the faint hearted.

Even the disciples understood this.

“The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19‬:‭10‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬
